CNC Milling & Turning
Horizontal machining and live-tool lathe turning for steel shafts, plates, and structural components. Complex geometries also available via 5-axis CNC.
Steel CNC Machining
Steel CNC machining covers carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, and tool steel — materials chosen for hardness, wear resistance, structural strength, and stable long-term performance. Zonclair machines steel components for heavy-load and high-precision applications, from prototype brackets to production shafts and mold inserts.
We combine horizontal CNC milling, CNC turning, and — where required — 5-axis machining and wire EDM for hardened or intricate features. Upload your CAD for a free DFM review before production starts.

Steel Grades We Machine
1045 Carbon Steel CNC Machining
Also known as 45# steel or S45C.
1045 is a widely used medium-carbon steel with strong tensile strength, hardness, toughness, wear resistance, and fatigue performance. It machines predictably, responds well to heat treatment, and offers a practical balance of cost and mechanical properties for industrial precision parts.
Typical Parts
- Shafts, spindles, and guide pins
- Gears, sprockets, and couplings
- Fixtures, jigs, and automation frames
- Bolts, bushings, and wear-resistant connectors
Machining Precision
Standard tolerance: ±0.10 mm for typical steel components. For special requirements — precision fits, critical bores, or tighter drawing specifications — we can hold ±0.01 mm on request, with CMM verification where specified.
Process Note
We machine with finishing allowance before in-house quenching and tempering, then perform stress relief and post-heat-treatment CNC finishing to control distortion and hold final dimensions.
Why Zonclair for 1045
1045 is our go-to grade for strength-critical parts. In-house heat treatment, 100% pre-shipment inspection, optional FAI, and flexible MOQ from prototype to batch production.
316 Stainless Steel CNC Machining (SS316)
316 is a molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel with strong pitting and crevice corrosion resistance, good performance in acidic and salt-spray environments, high toughness, and — as a material grade — suitability for many medical and marine applications.
Typical Parts
- Medical device housings, fittings, and instrument components
- Marine hardware, pump parts, and saltwater-exposed fittings
- Chemical-processing valves, flanges, and manifolds
- Semiconductor and food-processing equipment parts
Machining Precision
Standard tolerance: ±0.10 mm for typical steel components. For special requirements — precision fits, critical bores, or tighter drawing specifications — we can hold ±0.01 mm on request, with CMM verification where specified.
Process Note
SS316 work-hardens and chips can adhere to tools. We use sharp coated carbide tooling, high-pressure coolant, and low-speed layered rough-to-finish passes — followed by in-house passivation for enhanced corrosion resistance on medical and marine parts.
Why Zonclair for SS316
When corrosion resistance matters most, SS316 is the right choice. We deliver burr-free surfaces, in-house passivation, stable dimensions, and documented inspection for medical and marine customers.
304 Stainless Steel CNC Machining (SS304)
304 is the most common general-purpose austenitic stainless steel — good rust resistance, high toughness, non-magnetic properties, and a strong cost-to-performance ratio for a wide range of industrial components.
Typical Parts
- Food-processing and commercial kitchen hardware
- Electronic enclosures, brackets, and automation fittings
- Medical device housings and non-implant hardware
- Panels, handles, and general mechanical structures
Machining Precision
Standard tolerance: ±0.10 mm for typical steel components. For special requirements — precision fits, critical bores, or tighter drawing specifications — we can hold ±0.01 mm on request, with CMM verification where specified.
Process Note
SS304 is ductile and prone to chip sticking and work-hardening. We use multi-step rough-to-finish strategies, high-pressure coolant, controlled feeds, deburring, and in-house passivation for clean, rust-resistant delivery.
Why Zonclair for SS304
SS304 is ideal when you need rust resistance at lower material cost than 316. In-house passivation, consistent surface quality, stable precision, and flexible volumes for food-equipment, electronics, and general industrial projects.
Steel Material Selection Guide
| Material | Corrosion Resistance | Strength & Hardness | Best For | Typical Post-Process |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1045 Carbon Steel | Low — needs coating or plating | High (heat-treatable) | Shafts, gears, fixtures | In-house quench & temper, black oxide, plating |
| 304 Stainless (SS304) | Good — general purpose | Moderate | Food, electronics, general mechanical | In-house passivation, bead blast, electropolish |
| 316 Stainless (SS316) | Excellent — marine & chemical | Moderate to high | Medical, marine, chemical, semiconductor | In-house passivation, electropolish |

Steel Machining Challenges & Our Solutions
Stainless Work-Hardening & Chip Adhesion (304 / 316)
Challenge: Austenitic grades work-harden under the tool; chips can stick and leave burrs or poor finishes.
Solution: Sharp coated tools, high-pressure coolant, consistent depth-of-cut strategy, and dedicated finishing passes.
Heat-Treatment Distortion (1045)
Challenge: Quenching and tempering can move critical dimensions.
Solution: Pre-treatment machining with finish allowance, in-house controlled heat treatment, and CNC finishing after hardening.
Quality Control & Precision Metrology
Quality is built into every step of our steel machining process. Each custom part undergoes rigorous in-house inspection before shipment — supported by advanced metrology equipment including ZEISS SPECTRUM CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machines), optical comparators, and spectrometers for material verification.
- 100% pre-shipment dimensional inspection against drawing requirements
- Standard tolerance: ±0.10 mm for typical steel parts
- ±0.01 mm for special requirements — quoted and CMM-verified on request
- Optional First Article Inspection (FAI) with full dimensional report
- Full material traceability from stock to finished part
